Presa Canario
My breed was developed in the Canary Islands by crossing the now extinct Bardino Majero with the Mastiff of England, so I am frequently called the Canary Dog.
The name might sound gentle, but it is misleading, since I was bred for the sole purpose of fighting. When dogfighting was outlawed on the island, my breed faced extinction for a time, but thanks to Dr. Carl Semencic, that didn’t happen.
My appearance in itself is certainly a deterrent to any intruder, but I also have the strength and ability to follow through when necessary.
I must have firm, fair handling and very early obedience training.
When fully grown, I am between 22 and 26 inches tall (55.9 to 66 centimeters) and I weigh between 84 and 135 pounds (37.8 to 60.8 kilograms).
