Portuguese Water Dog

For many years, my relatives have worked for Portuguese fishermen to herd fish into nets and to retrieve valuable tackle that falls overboard, as well as to guard nets and fishing gear on shore.

I am told that long, long ago my ancestors were herders of cattle, sheep and camels on the central Asian steppes, but I prefer to be a water dog myself.

My thick coat comes in in two types: long and loosely waved or short and dense. Mine happens to be the "long and loosely waved" version, but it is hard for you to tell in this picture, because I have been swimming and playing in the park all day.

I am not a show dog, so I don't have to have any special hair-do, but I have some friends who look really fancy! I come in white, black, or brown, sometimes with white markings.

My owner thinks that I am very smart and we enjoy a lot of things together, mainly watersports.

When fully grown, I am between 16 and 22 inches tall (40.6 to 55.9 centimeters) and I weigh between 35 and 60 pounds (15.8 to 27 kilograms).
