Poodle (Standard)
In France they call me a Caniche and I am told that one of my ancestors lived with Queen Marie Antoinette in the 1700s. My breed originated in ancient France and my earliest relatives were extremely skilled water retrievers.
I look a lot like the Irish Water Spaniel, but you can't see that here because I am all gussied and trimmed up for the picture. Even if you don't want to dress me up all of the time, I have to be brushed daily and trimmed about every six weeks, or my hair will get all matted and yucky.
Poodles come in three sizes and I am the largest. We are all smart, active and even- tempered. You might have seen quite a few of my smaller (miniature and toy) cousins in circus acts because we all learn so quickly and love to perform.
I could do the same tricks that they do, but most people don't want to try to catch a 70 lb dog, jumping off a high diving board into their arms!!
When fully grown, I am between 15 and 18 inches tall (38.1 to 45.7 centimeters) and I weigh between 45 and 70 pounds (20.3 to 31.5 kilograms).
